Who runs the app

The Altoman app and altoman.net are run by the app's owner for the Al-Masaeed community. For privacy questions, or to request a copy or deletion of your data, email info@altoman.net.

Data we collect

At sign-up: full name, email address, mobile number, date of birth and password. In your profile: username, occupation, bio, profile photo, and your city and country of residence if you choose them. What you add yourself: comments, topics, events, poems, literary articles, services, attendance, reports and blocks; photos and videos you upload; gathering (shabba) requests including the place, map location and any home photos you attach; and your home location if you pin it. From your phone: the notification token and platform (iOS or Android), and the delivery result of each notification from Apple or Google.

Why we use it

Only to run the app: creating accounts and reviewing membership, showing content, sending notifications and reminders, account emails such as sign-up confirmation and password recovery, and protecting the community from abuse. We show no ads, sell no data, do not track you across other apps or websites, and use no analytics tools.

Who can see your data

Published news, events, gatherings, services, comments, albums and poems are visible to everyone, including visitors. Once your membership is approved, your name, photo, occupation and bio are visible to everyone, as is your city of residence if you choose to show it in the member directory; approved members see your name when you register to attend an event; and a phone number you write in a service you publish is shown with it; once a gathering request is approved, its host, city and schedule are visible to everyone, while its place, map location and attached home photos are visible only to approved members. Your email, account mobile number and date of birth are visible only to you and the app owner. Passwords are stored encrypted by the authentication service and are never visible to the administration. Topics, events, services, literary articles and gathering requests are published only after the owner or a moderator the owner appoints approves them, and moderators see these requests before publication. Comments, albums and poems by approved poets in their own collection appear immediately, and the administration can hide any that break the rules.

Location

The app does not access your phone's location. If you pin your home yourself, it stays visible only to you and the administration unless you choose to show it to members; if the administration adds it after confirming your consent, it is shown to approved members. Either way you can delete it at any time. The map, home locations, gathering locations and their home photos are for approved members only; visitors and accounts awaiting approval do not see them. An approved gathering's location is shown while the host's membership is approved and their profile is visible; a Ramadan or Eid gathering disappears after its date, and the host can stop showing their gathering at any time. Maps use OpenStreetMap tiles on the website, Apple Maps on iPhone and Google Maps on Android.

Albums

Personal and gathering albums, photos and videos are public to everyone, including visitors, so do not upload anything you do not want published. You can delete your files; a viewing link issued earlier may keep working for up to five minutes after an album is hidden, and anyone who viewed the content may have kept a copy.

Notifications

If you allow notifications, we store your phone's notification token to send you news, circulars and reminders through Expo and the Apple and Google notification services. You can turn them off in your phone settings or in the app's notification settings, delete any of them from the notifications screen, and the token is deleted with your account. Reminders for events you attend are scheduled on your phone itself.

Permissions

Photos: only to pick the photos and videos you upload. Calendar: on iPhone with iOS 16 or earlier only, to add an event when you ask; we do not read your calendar. Notifications: to receive alerts. The app does not use the camera, microphone, contacts or the phone's location.

Service providers

Providers process data on our behalf and only to run the app: Supabase for the database, files and accounts; Vercel for hosting the website and server; Expo for delivering notifications; and Resend for email. When a map is shown on Android, the Google Maps library collects technical data about the device, crashes and map use under Google's policy. Data travels between your phone and these services over encrypted connections (HTTPS).

Retention and deletion

We keep your data while your account exists. You can edit your profile under «حسابي» (My account) and delete your account there or at https://altoman.net/delete-account. This deletes your profile, photo, albums and their files, home location, comments on news, attendance, services, gathering requests, membership data and notification tokens. What remains published without being linked to your account: your topics and events that the administration published, and your poetry collection, poems, literary articles and comments on poems. Your published gatherings stop being shown. The administration's decision log keeps your name and the titles of what you submitted. We delete the published items if you ask by email. Backups may keep data for no more than 7 days before it is deleted automatically. If the connection drops during deletion, retry to complete it.

Children

The app is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their data. If you learn that a child has registered, contact us and we will delete the account.

Community safety

You can report comments, poems and poem comments, albums and member profiles, and block members from appearing to you. The administration reviews reports, hides content that breaks the rules and may suspend membership.
